did alright yesterday as chickendinnerwinner got the ideal first over trip to win. western hemisphere was awesome, but did you catch the run from frysland who was a much better than looked fourth in only her third career start and first after breaking her maiden. she should be put on the watch list, and if she shows up again in a nw1x, she'll win for fun. not too much today, so here's the quick and dirty.

r3: slewston. this one has turned into a tiger of late and his last race was as good as it looks on paper.

r5: lear jet set. think the experienced one, who drew the outside will have a big edge on the crew of firsters. paasch doesn't win often, but he can train and if the firsters get overbet, she's the one.

r8: king of happiness. tvg is going overboard with desormeaux's ride on musical chimes in yesterday's mabee handicap, but he does ride the del mar turf very well and i think we may see a coming out party for this drysdale trainee. with all the money coming in on the entry, we should see a decent price on tihs five year old late blooming son of the awesome spinning world.

r9: perfect mode. don't like the rail, but this warren comebacker has shown talent earlier in the year and figures to come firing around the turn. not the most likely winner, but the best gamble in the race.

Good luck with your plays today. Must say that Bayamo looks very tough in the Eddie Read today should he take to the seaside turf course. If not, should King of Happiness be successful, you should receive better than 10-1. Best of luck.

oldman,

the whole world will be on the bayamo/special ring entry and while the two are the most likely winners, it should be noted that bayamo beat absolutely nobody in his last (save for the comebacking sarafan) race. while this isn't the strongest renewal of the eddie read (i can still remember kotashaan winning in one of the most breathtaking moves i've seen the year he was crowned horse of the year), it is a big step up from bayamo's last race. of course, i wouldn't be at all shocked if he wins, i have no trouble gambling against him at depressed odds.

Agree that the price on the Bayamo/Special Ring could be prohibitive and that looking for value is the way to go here. That being said, the race appears to shape up with little pace and Bayamo should get a stalkers trip on the outside and out of trouble. The field should be well bunched down the backstretch and into the far turn before being asked to run while turning for home. Appears to be a sprint the last quarter mile after a modest pace with the winner being on or near the pace setter. With the short Del Mar turf stretch, could be difficult for any horse coming from behind. Been going to Del Mar since the '70's and before the Pacific Classic existed. The Eddie Read Handicap use to be the Race of the Meeting. Have always enjoyed it and have had my share of some nice priced winners in the history of the race. Good luck today.

i absolutely agree with your pace analysis, as only bailey on sweet return and the comebacking special ring look to have any sort of early foot. obviously, special ring can have the lead if he wants it as the races in which sweet return has shown early speed have come at the marathon distances, and 'ring will be difficult to catch/pass. there's going to be a fair amount of luck needed to win this thing from behind, but 'happiness seems to have enough position speed to stay close and if a hole opens up, he could be right there. i've always had a soft spot for sarafan, but methinks he's getting a bit long in the tooth to win grade 1s anymore. good luck whomever you bet.

well, lear jet set is being crushed at the windows here in the 5th, and i will now play against her at 2/1. looking at two firsters, #2 bertha jo, who should pop the gate and #4 ruled by numbers, who is probably the best value in the race, notwithstanding zucker's o-fer with first timers the last year.
